Get involved in the community!

Ben is a passionate leader in the bleeding disorders community, an active youth leader in Victoria and is part of their youth team at camps and youth activities. Ben is also a Youth Lead Connect participant for 2016 and shares his experience of being involved in the community and what he has learnt on his leadership journey:
Ben has been working closely with Haemophilia Foundation Victoria (HFV)’s youth team. In particular, Ben has been working with the team to encourage the youth to take on new responsibilities in the community. The success of the youth team has been achieved through Ben’s close collaboration and consultation with the HFV committee and working alongside youth in the Victorian community to make sure that their voice is heard.
“There is a benefit for everyone to be involved in the community, at any age and in any capacity. This includes being a leader, mentor or simply joining an event to make friends.”
Ben encourages youth to: “Try and take on new challenges”.
Ben’s had such a positive experience being part of the Blood Brothers camp in Victoria and he “Wanted to motivate youth from other states, where there wasn’t a camp available”. This led to the development of one of Ben’s hurdles for the YLC program which was to work with HFV and extend the opportunity of attending Blood Brothers to South Australia and Tasmania youth.
To achieve this: “I have had to work closely with HFV and the HFV committee and to create an invitation flyer for South Australia and Tasmania on behalf of HFV.”
Through being involved in the Youth Lead Connect (YLC) training in February 2016, “I have learnt a lot about my own leadership style and I like that everyone has their own leadership style, because it highlights the diversity of the community and also allows for many different and helpful perspectives and ideas.”
Ben encourages all youth to express their unique personality in their leadership style because a diverse team makes sure that everyone is represented from the community.
It is important to be part of the youth community:
“It can build your confidence, help develop new skills, build lasting friendships, and create a support network”
Ben encourages all youth to be involved in the community, build skills and make great friends!
